Equal Dignity

June 30th, 2015|Categories: Journal|

When I was a little girl in Manhattan, in the warm spring months, men could at last roll up their sleeves. On my way home from school, I'd stop into the local candy store, pick out my treat and offer my quarter to “the candy man.” That's what we called him. As he gave me my candy, I noticed tattooed numbers on his arm. It wasn't until years later I realized he'd survived some death camp imprisonment during World War II. He had been identified as an “other.” That's all it took to de-humanize him but [...]

Kindness

June 7th, 2015|Categories: Journal|

In the last few years there has been a profound awakening in my life due to some deep emotional seismic shifts. Details are not terribly important. What I would consider run of the mill catastrophes. What landed at my feet and in my heart was the kindness that was shown to me and my kids during that time.My village of family and extended family helped me organize my mind and my life and it was overwhelming.Seeing a houseful of people packing up my stuff alongside me to move one afternoon and those too fragile to do heavy [...]

If Time Was God

May 26th, 2015|Categories: Journal|

I've been thinking about this for a while now. The only element in life, consistent and impartial, is time – and, more specifically, the passing of time. And, though time and its subdivisions - days, months, years - may have originally been a way to understand the change and passing of seasons, it remains a constant presence in every second of everyone's life, always. Holy books and their reflected religious codified creeds, on the other hand, state how to live with grand rewards or awful consequences, depending upon personal choices in- or out-of-line with their core concepts. [...]

Procrastination

I have achieved a level of mastery in a particular talent. Indeed, I could be called “sensai” or even“guru” due to the depth and breadth of my amazing gift. It's not singing or songwriting, upon which I've built a sturdy and enduring career. This is a peculiar talent that precedes the expression of all others ... procrastination. I have been refining it for decades now. It comes ever so naturally to me. Unless there is a national, natural or family crisis that must be attended to, my ability to achieve mind-numbing procrastination is, I do believe, [...]
